Great Plains Nursery is a family owned business located near Weston, Nebraska. Owners, Brian and Heather Byers have a passion for growing and planting Nebraska native trees and all trees alike. They feel a strong sense of stewardship and ecology when it comes to the environment.

Creating a healthy, strong tree...

The Great Plains System - a holistic approach to growing the next generation of trees - is the reason Great Plains Nursery produces trees that are long-lived and healthy. What makes a healthy, strong tree? It begins with the stock of the parent tree. Heather and Brian collect many of the tree seeds they germinate from parent trees, preferably native & wild stands, right here in Nebraska.This ensures that the genetics of the tree are adapted and well suited to our climate and growing conditions.

Great Plains Nursery then grows saplings in Rootmaker pots, a type of pot that encourages fibrous, well balanced root systems. A tree is only as good as it's roots, and when the roots  are strong and plentiful the tree is more efficient at absorbing water and nutrients, grows faster, and has a higher transplant survivability.

In addition to genetics, and air pruning tree roots, Great Plains Nursery makes selective pruning cuts early on to create a sturdy sapling. “GP System trees are purposefully grown to be 'short and stocky' as a young tree to promote faster establishment and encourage longevity and strength in a climate that is ever-changing.”
