Onion rings

Author: The Hoagland Homestead

2019 was our first year growing a large crop of sweet onions. We grew several varieties, including a couple that get very large. My 5 year old picked the biggest he could find and insisted we make onions rings. He helped dredge each ring in the flour mixture and was proud of our end results. These are a family favorite!

Ingredients:

  • 2 Sweet Onions
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 tbs. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. ground pepper
  • vegetable oil, or oil of choice

Directions:

  1. Slice onions in 1/2 to 1” rings and separate
  2. Soak rings, covered in the refrigerator for at least an hour
  3. In a large pot fill with 3” of oil, heat to 350 degrees
  4. In a pie plate or shallow bowl combine flour, salt, and pepper.Dredge rings in flour well, you can even dip in buttermilk and flour mixture a second tim
